Concrete for Nashville's Hills and Hollows

Nashville homeowners looking for concrete contractors are dealing with a city of 689,447 people at the 2020 census, spread across more than 500 square miles of land since the city and Davidson County merged their governments in 1963. We work mostly in the southern half of the county, closest to our Brentwood base, pouring driveways, patios, sidewalks, steps and slabs and fixing concrete that has heaved, sunk or broken apart.

A hilly city by nature

Nashville sits on the Cumberland River in the northwestern part of the Nashville Basin, where it meets the start of the Highland Rim. Elevations run from 385 feet at the river to 1,163 feet at Radnor Lake State Natural Area. Plenty of lots in between have a real grade on them, and slope changes how concrete has to be built.

On a steep driveway we think about traction, so a broom finish runs across the slope instead of with it. We think about how the drive meets the garage floor so cars do not scrape, and about where water goes at the bottom. Hillside patios often need a retaining edge or steps built in, and front walks on sloped yards may need landings between runs of steps so they are comfortable to climb.

The water lesson of 2010

Between May 1 and May 7, 2010, much of Nashville flooded. 13.57 inches of rain fell during the two days of May 1 and 2, and the Cumberland River crested at 51.86 feet, a level not seen since 1937. Damage across the region ran into the billions. Floods like that are rare, but heavy storms are not: the airport averages 50.51 inches of precipitation a year.

For concrete, that means grading is not an afterthought. A patio poured level with the lawn and pitched toward the house will hold water against the foundation in a storm. A driveway that funnels runoff into the garage will do the same. We set every slab with a deliberate fall, add drains or swales where the yard needs them, and compact the base so water cannot wash it out from below.

Freeze-thaw with little snow

Nashville averages only 4.7 inches of snow a year, but the record low is minus 17 degrees, set on January 21, 1985. Winters bounce above and below freezing, which is hard on concrete that holds water in its surface. We use air-entrained mixes for outdoor slabs, cure them properly, and advise owners to skip rock salt on new concrete for the first winter.

Storm repairs

The tornado of March 3, 2020, tracked west to east just north of downtown, through neighborhoods including North Nashville, Germantown, East Nashville, Donelson and Hermitage. Storm cleanup often leaves broken walks and driveways behind, cracked by fallen trees or heavy equipment. We remove damaged sections, rebuild the base, and pour replacements that match the surrounding concrete as closely as possible.

Nashville Questions

How do you keep a steep Nashville driveway from being slippery?

We use a broom finish pulled across the slope for grip and avoid slick sealers. On very steep drives we can add a coarser texture or grooves so tires and shoes hold in wet weather.

Water pools on my patio after every storm. Can it be fixed?

If the slab has settled or was poured flat, the fix is usually replacing it with a proper fall away from the house, sometimes with a drain at the low edge. Small low spots can sometimes be corrected by replacing one section.

Do you work everywhere in Davidson County?

We focus on the southern half of the county nearest Brentwood, including Green Hills, Oak Hill, Forest Hills, Antioch and Bellevue, and we take jobs farther in when the schedule allows.
