Concrete for Antioch's Mix of Old and New

Antioch keeps concrete contractors busy, and for good reason. The community, about 12 miles southeast of downtown Nashville, had 97,372 residents at the 2020 count and still has some of the highest growth rates in the metro area. Homes range from 1970s ranches to houses finished last year, and each brings its own driveway, patio and walkway needs.

From a church village to a big suburb

Antioch takes its name from the Church at Antioch, which landowner Charles Hays named in 1820 when he donated land near Mill Creek. Mill Creek Valley Pike, now Antioch Pike, opened in 1846, and by the 1880s the village had a rail station, a store and a blacksmith shop. Antioch was never incorporated; it is defined mostly by its postal address.

The big change came in the 1970s, when sewer expansion and available farmland brought explosive growth, including many low-rise apartment complexes. Hickory Hollow Mall opened in 1978 with more than 140 stores and 5,795 parking spaces. It has since been redeveloped as the Commons at the Crossings, and new projects like Century Farms are adding even more homes and businesses.

What that means for concrete

Homes from the 1970s and 1980s have driveways and patios that are now 40 to 50 years old. We see:

  • Cracked and sunken drives where the base has washed out over the decades
  • Patios that tilt toward the house after the soil under them settled
  • Front steps that have separated from the porch or foundation
  • Walks heaved by tree roots

Newer houses tend to need additions instead: a wider driveway for another car, a patio where the builder left grass, or a walk around the side of the house to the back gate.

Mill Creek and drainage

Mill Creek runs through the heart of Antioch, and Metro greenway projects follow it. It can rise fast. On May 1, 2010, a flash flood completely covered Interstate 24 near Antioch. Most of the year the issue is smaller but constant: heavy rain running off roofs and yards and across concrete. When we plan a patio or driveway, we look at where the water comes from, where it needs to go, and whether a downspout needs to be redirected before we pour. A slab that sends water away from the house lasts longer and keeps the foundation drier.

Right-of-way and Metro

Because Antioch is part of Metro Nashville, work in the public right-of-way follows Metro rules. Before any driveway apron or curb-side work, we confirm what is needed and call Tennessee 811 so buried lines are marked.

Antioch Questions

My 1970s driveway in Antioch is cracked all over. Can you resurface it?

Resurfacing only works when the slab underneath is solid. If the drive has sunk, rocked or broken into pieces, a thin overlay will crack again. In most cases with a driveway that old, replacement is the better value.

Can you add a patio where my builder left only a small pad?

Yes. We can remove the small pad or tie into it, then pour a larger patio with the right slope. Tying in needs dowels so the old and new sections move together.

Do I need to be home during the pour?

Not necessarily. We need access to the work area and a place for the concrete truck or pump. We go over timing, curing and when you can walk or drive on the new concrete beforehand.

Can you match new concrete to my older Antioch driveway?

New concrete is always a little lighter at first, and old concrete has weathered for decades. We match the broom texture and joint pattern so the patch blends in, and the color gap narrows as the new section weathers over the first year or two.
